Abstract

Poverty continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing many economies around the world. Studies related to poverty in recent years are not limited to income poverty and depend on other dimensions such as health, education and living standards. Multidimensional poverty index is one of the most important indicators in poverty investigation. In this research, the multidimensional poverty index was calculated by the method of Alkire and Foster during the sixth development plan (2017-2021) and using the raw data of household income and expenditure of the Statistics Center of Iran. The review of the performance of the sixth development program showed that during the years under review, multidimensional poverty in urban and rural areas have increased. So that in 2021, 9.57% of urban households and 8.43% of rural households have multidimensional deprivation in at least 33.3% of indicators. Based on the results, the Headcount ratio is higher in urban areas than in rural areas in all the studied years, but the intensity of poverty is higher in rural areas than in urban areas. Also, the results showed that the sixth development program has reduced deprivation in various sub-indices, but in some sub-indices such as suitable nutrition and health insurance, the desired results have not been achieved. Therefore, to reduce multidimensional poverty, it is suggested to develop a policy program in different dimensions of poverty including, a food basket plan containing the calories and protein required by the body, making necessary arrangements for Health insurance for households, creating suitable incentives to encourage households to continue their education at higher levels and creating the necessary facilities for more households to enjoy the standards of life should be considered.
