Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency based on data envelopment analysis (DEA) for modern chicken farms in Fars province. For this purpose, after completing the questionnaire in 2009, technical, economic and scale efficiency were measured. Results of this study showed that average of technical efficiency (CRS) for producers is 88 percent that revealed that chicken units in Fars provice can without incearising their capacity and with available possibilities and impose better planning, incearese their output about 0.12. Also, approximately for 57 percent of units, technical efficiency was above average. In addition, average of scale efficiency and management efficiency of selected farmers were obtained 91 and 80 percent, respectively. This means that chicken units of Fars provice have free space (assuming the other conditions being constant) in scale and management. With comparing technical (CRS) and scale efficiency this result revealed that farmers have access to optimal activity but in terms of production are very different. Also, average of allocation and economic efficiency for farmers were 74 and 65 percent, respectively. In addition, comparing actual and optimal consumption of inputs showed that in the most of the units food input is not optimal. So attention to this issue has to regard for increasing efficiency.
