Factors Influencing Adoption of Rural Livestock Insurance in Shoushtar County

Abstract

Agricultural insurance is considered as an effective way to reduce production risk. In this study for investigating the factors which influence adoption of rural livestock insurance in Shoushtar county, 148 ranchers are selected by stratified random sampling in 2010 and their willingness toward insurance is analyzed using questionnairs and Logit model. The research findings showed that number of herds, awareness of insurance and access to brokers have a positive and significant effect on insurance adoption, while factors such as education and lack of beaucracy in damage compensation have a negative effect on insurance adoption. According to the estimated coefficients and the value of marginal effects, it is seemed that insurance companies can successful through organizing and managing steps such as employing and organizing experts and increasing access for ranchers and farmers, and providing ranchers with a suitable and practical bureaucratic model for insurance and redress.
