Relationship Between Technical Efficiency and Size of Poultry Farms in Sonqor- Kolyaee County

Abstract

  In the last decade, poultry meat as a livestock product has had a fast growth of production, consumption and meat trade in the world. Thus, due to the importance of the poultry meat as a strategic protein product, necessity of studying about the economic aspects of poultry industry appears. According to low efficiency of production factors and the variety of size of poultry units in Iran, it seems to be necessary to survey the technical efficiency of units and its relation to the size of firms to favorite and economic uses of the available resources . The objective of this study is to survey the relationship between technical efficiency and poultry size of Sonqor- Kolyaee in 2009. Data were collected by questionnaire completed from 100 active poultry meat firms in Sonqor- Kolyaee . To achieve the aim of study, stochastic frontier production function was estimated. Using a stochastic frontier production function the average technical efficiency was estimated as 82.17 percent. R egression analysis confirmed positive relationship between technical efficiency and the size of poultry firms Sonqor- Kolyaee. Therefore it is advisable to support large producing units and to give more facilities in order to extend small units in the region.     JEL Classification : C31,D22, D24
